New “Download” Feature Added to Google Merchant Center Promotions

Google has quietly introduced a small but interesting update in the Promotions UI of Google Merchant Center: a Download option that appears when setting up new promotions.

While this may seem minor, it’s worth taking a closer look at what it does and what it might mean for the future of promotions management.

Where You’ll Find It

When you create a new promotion in Merchant Center, you’ll now notice a Download button in the second step of the setup process (it also appears in the first step, though it’s inactive until you’ve filled in all required fields).

Once you’ve completed the details and click Download, Google will generate a file containing all the information you’ve entered, attributes, promotion details, and other metadata.

What the File Contains

When you open the downloaded file, you’ll see a detailed breakdown of your promotion setup. Essentially, it’s a text-based record of the configuration you’ve entered into the UI.

However, it’s important to note that this file cannot currently be uploaded back into Google Merchant Center. It’s not structured like the official promotion feed format (e.g., a tab-delimited file, CSV, or a Google Sheet with individual columns for each attribute).

Is It Useful?

At the moment, not really, at least not for direct functionality. You can’t modify the file and re-upload it, and there’s no clear integration path for automated feed management.

That said, this could be an early step toward something bigger. Google might be preparing the groundwork for a future upload/import feature within the Merchant Center Promotions interface, possibly allowing merchants to manage promotions directly from files or feeds.

Still, as of now, it’s more of an informational export than a practical tool.

My Thoughts

While it’s not particularly useful yet, it’s always interesting to see Google testing or preparing new features. This could be part of an internal testing phase, or a soft rollout toward allowing feed-based promotion management directly in the UI.

If you’ve experimented with this new download file or discovered any hidden purpose behind it, feel free to share your experience in the comments below. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
