How to Fix Google Shopping Automatically Cropping Your Product Images

Have you ever noticed that your Google Shopping ads show cropped or zoomed-in product images, sometimes focusing on just one wheel or a random section of your product? You’re not imagining it. This issue, which has puzzled many merchants for years, is caused by Google’s Smart Cropping feature, a behind-the-scenes automation that’s enabled by default and can distort how your products appear in search results.

In this article, I’ll explain what causes this issue, why the usual fixes often don’t work, and how to permanently resolve it by contacting Google Support to disable Smart Cropping for your account.

The Common Cropped Image Problem

Many merchants have seen this scenario:
Your product images appear perfectly fine within Google Merchant Center, but when they are displayed in Shopping results, they’re zoomed in, off-center, or oddly cropped.

Traditionally, I’ve advised merchants to make sure their products fill at least 75% or more of the total image area. Avoid excessive white space and keep the product centered. That’s still best practice for Merchant Center optimization, but in some cases, it doesn’t help at all.

That’s because your image layout doesn’t cause the issue; it’s Google automatically modifying your image through Smart Cropping.

The Hidden Cause: “Smart Cropping”

Credit goes to Kirk Williams from ZATO Marketing, who discovered that Google automatically opts merchants into this Smart Cropping feature at the account level.

Here’s what happens:
Google’s system tries to “improve” your images by zooming in on what it thinks is the most relevant area of the product. Unfortunately, it’s often wrong, leading to distorted visuals in Shopping ads.

Even worse, this feature is neither visible nor configurable in the Merchant Center interface. You can’t toggle it off yourself.

The Fix: Ask Google Support to Opt You Out

The good news? There’s a fix, but it requires contacting Google Support.

When you reach out, explain that your Shopping images are being cropped incorrectly and you’d like to opt out of Smart Cropping. Google Support will confirm that this change applies at the account level (not the item level) and will request written approval.

You’ll receive a response similar to this:

“Please confirm that you would like to opt out of Smart Cropping as the image crop is not as desired.
Keep in mind that opting out will apply at the account level.
To give us one-time approval to make the change, please use the approval template below.
This authorization should come from the admin or super admin of your Merchant Center account.”

Once approved, Google will disable Smart Cropping for your account, and your images should start displaying normally.

Why Google Should Add a UI Toggle

While it’s great that this fix works, it’s frustrating that such a simple setting isn’t available in the Merchant Center interface. Merchants shouldn’t have to contact support to correct automated behavior that distorts product presentation.

Ideally, Google should include a “Smart Cropping” toggle in the Merchant Center UI, allowing advertisers to opt out directly. Until then, you’ll need to handle it through a support request.

Final Thoughts

This issue has existed for years without an official fix, so it’s great that the community, through people like Kirk Williams, continues to uncover these hidden settings.

If you’ve verified that your Merchant Center images appear fine, but your Shopping results display cropped or zoomed-in visuals, you’re likely affected by Smart Cropping. Contact Google Support to request opting out, ensuring the request originates from the account administrator.

Hopefully, Google will make this process easier in the future.

Special thanks to Kirk Williams (ZATO Marketing) for sharing this discovery and helping many merchants finally resolve an issue that has been quietly impacting Shopping ads for years.
