One of the most common issues I see merchants run into inside Google Merchant Center is accidentally submitting a local inventory feed when they don’t actually have a physical store. It sounds like a minor mistake, but it can lead to product approval warnings, limited visibility, and significant confusion. In this article, I’ll walk you through what causes the issue, how to identify it, and exactly how to fix it in three steps.
First, Do You Have a Physical Shop?
Before anything else, ask yourself this one simple question: Do I have a physical retail location?
If the answer is no, then you should not have a local inventory feed set up at all. Local inventory feeds are designed to display in-store availability for physical shops. If you’re an online-only store, this feed is irrelevant to your setup and will cause errors.
If the answer is yes, then you’ll want to investigate and properly configure your local feed. I’ll cover that in a separate guide, drop a comment on the video if you’d like me to prioritize that one.
This article focuses on the far more common scenario: merchants who have accidentally enabled local inventory feeds when they shouldn’t have.
How the Error Shows Up
This issue typically surfaces in two places inside Google Merchant Center. You might see a warning about limited approval of items due to missing inventory data, or you’ll notice a large percentage of your products flagged for missing local inventory data, sometimes 90% or more.
You can find these warnings by going to the Needs Attention tab under Products, or by navigating to Data Sources, where you may see a local feed partnership listed as needing an update or requiring attention.
Why does this happen so often? In most cases, the culprit is the Google & YouTube app inside Shopify. Merchants set up the app without fully reviewing the settings, and a local inventory option gets enabled by default or by accident. My biggest piece of advice: always take the time to understand every setting before you activate it. If something isn’t clear, look it up. A small oversight like this can create a lot of unnecessary problems down the line.
How to Fix It? 3 Simple Steps
1) Turn Off Local Inventory in Shopify
Open the Google & YouTube app in your Shopify admin. Go to Settings, then Product Sync. Look for the dropdown menu and expand it. You’ll see an option called Local Inventory Location. If it’s toggled on, turn it off. This is the root cause for most merchants and should be your first action.

2) Remove Local Listings and Local Ads in Google Merchant Center
In Google Merchant Center, go to Settings and then click on Add-ons. From there, find and remove both Free Local Listings and Local Inventory Ads. These add-ons are what enable local features for your account, and removing them is essential if you don’t have a physical store.

3) Disable “For Physical Stores” in Your Primary Feed
Still inside Google Merchant Center, go to Settings → Data Sources. Click into your Primary Feed, then select Data Source Setup. Scroll down to the section labelled How the data will be used and click the edit icon next to Marketing methods. Make sure the option for For Physical Stores is disabled. Save your changes.
Tip: Once you’ve completed all three steps, give it up to 24 hours. Google Merchant Center will re-process your feed, and the local inventory errors and warnings should disappear on their own. You don’t need to do anything else.

That’s Really All There Is to It
I know it can feel overwhelming when you log into Merchant Center and see a sea of warnings, but this particular issue is one of the easier ones to resolve. Three steps, and you’re done. The key takeaway here is to be proactive about understanding your feed settings before problems arise, especially when using third-party apps like the Google & YouTube Shopify integration.

I have a physical location and a Local Feed Partnership data source but it uses the same product ids as my online store for those products (my inventory is the same online and in store) so I’m getting duplicate Product ID errors. I don’t know how to fix the errors in GMC and I have tried just about everything.
I recommend for the primary feed, to have 1 feed for shopping ads, free listings, display ads and local listings. Not 2.
Then add 1 supplemental local inventory feed.
If you want to go with your setup, you need to ensure there is no overlapping primary feed. So in your case, ensure the local product feed is only for free local and or paid local, not with shopping ads, free listings or display ads.
I followed these instructions, but all of my product are still showing missing inventory data. This has happened just after reinstalling the Google & Youtube app on Shopify, and updating the Content API to the new Merchant API. Is there anything else that could cause this issue?
If it’s the content API, make sure to delete the data source it self as well. Just keep the merchant API.
And make sure to wait 24 hours after all the steps are followed, if you continue to have issues, please let me know.
